ONE Master Part 3

In a world consumed by the pursuit of growth, good marketing, and social media followers it's easy to lose sight of our ultimate purpose and destiny--JESUS. The Holy Spirit through the Bible reminds us that we cannot serve two masters; we must choose between the treasures of this world (popularity and influence) and the eternal riches of His Kingdom (deny self, pick up your cross, and follow Jesus).

"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." Matthew 6:24

Those who chase after the fleeting pleasures of earthly success may find temporary satisfaction, but they ultimately forfeit the incomparable blessings that await in the world to come.

"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" Mark 8:36

By pledging our allegiance to Jesus as our one true Master, we align ourselves with the values of His Kingdom – love, humility, and selflessness – and secure for ourselves an inheritance that will never fade away.

"But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." Matthew 6:20

The allure of worldly wealth and influence can be overwhelming, promising prestige and power in exchange for our devotion. But Jesus warns us of the dangers of serving two masters, for pursuing earthly treasures leads only to disillusionment and emptiness.

"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world." 1 John 2:15-16

In contrast, when we wholeheartedly commit ourselves to serving Jesus as our sole Master, we discover a richness of spirit that transcends material possessions and worldly acclaim.

"Seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:33

By prioritizing the advancement of His Kingdom over our own selfish ambitions, we find true fulfillment and purpose that extends far beyond the confines of this present age.

"For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it." Matthew 16:25

The choice between serving Jesus and chasing after the trappings of worldly success is a decision of eternal consequence. While the pursuit of wealth, power, and fame may offer temporary gratification, it ultimately leads to spiritual bankruptcy and separation from God.

"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?" Matthew 16:26

In contrast, those who devote themselves wholeheartedly to Jesus as their one true Master experience the abundant life He promises both now and for eternity.

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." John 10:10

By renouncing this world's false idols and embracing His Kingdom's unparalleled riches, we secure a legacy of faithfulness and a reward that far surpasses anything the world can offer.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21

Jesus came in Grace and Truth, and so did you and I. For of HIS FULLNESS we have all received, Grace upon Grace–THE Greater Works of Jesus Christ. It is by God’s Grace we have liberty and are set free. Humble yourself, confess your need for a Savior and walk in obedience to the TRUTH–all by Grace.

"And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth... For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace." John 1:14, 16

Examine yourself, ask the LIGHT of God to shine within you, revealing everything laying it bare. Humble yourself, confess your desperate need for the Holy Spirit to search you by Grace to reveal, prune, and remove all dross, trauma, and darkness. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your weaknesses and shortcomings and exchange all of them for His RIGHTEOUSNESS by Grace, making everything RIGHT.

"Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way." Psalm 139:23-24

Ask the Holy Spirit to search you and prove the perfect will of God. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your remembrance all that Jesus has taught you.

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you." John 14:26

One of the most important AND neglected overlooked TRUTHS Jesus came to establish is ONE Master. Jesus came, in part, to teach us that there is only ONE TRUE MASTER, and all other masters are counterfeits.

"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth." Matthew 6:24

Jesus came to Earth in part to declared ONE MASTER, NOT TWO! He came to give each one of us THE evidence of the indwelling of the Spirit of God, Jesus calls the Spirit of Truth. In His coming, Jesus declared Salvation has come, and that we have all passed from death, to life. Jesus came to teach us this TRUTH so we can choose between TWO MASTERS.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." Ephesians 2:8-9

Jesus came to teach about the danger of TWO MASTERS. He said, YOU CAN’T SERVE Two Masters, Me and money–we have to make a clear choice between the two. Jesus said we would love the one, and hate the other, but we can’t love both–it is virtually impossible. Jesus came to earth so that we can make and declare our choice between the two masters, God’s Grace or our money.

"But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name." John 1:12

By God’s Grace, we, all of humanity, have been redeemed and SAVED. We either accept this as truth and RECEIVE IT, meaning we really believe it in our hearts…, or we reject it.

"Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give." Matthew 10:8

The two choices are super simple; we can’t get them wrong by accident. We can RECEIVE the Word of God as THE TRUTH and BELIEVE Jesus is the CHRIST in our hearts, or we can reject it by default. When we BELIEVE, we RECEIVE–abide IN CHRIST.

"I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them." Acts 20:29-30

There is ONE CHOICE, two masters–choose wisely, Jesus says. We do not have a reference in the Bible stating that Jesus raised money, charged people, or collected a single dime. On the other hand, we have all kinds of evidence that Jesus gave everything He had and asked for nothing in return for Himself.

"These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: 'Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.'" Matthew 10:5-15

Jesus miraculously fed 5,000 people on one occasion and another 4,000 on another. He also healed tens of thousands, which involved feeding and healing a considerable number of individuals. Remarkably, Jesus never requested money, collected offerings, or charged any service fees.

"Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. And He was saying to them, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.'" Luke 10:1-12

Jesus SUPPLIED EVERYTHING and never demanded anything (money or material possessions) while exhausting His resources. He washed the feet of His disciples. The only sinless man took the betrayals, mockings, humiliation, torture, punishment, and pain for all the sins of the world, yet He did not call for a collection, institute a tithe, or charge His followers a tuition fee. He did not charge for anything.

"He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the sheep's owner, sees the wolf coming, leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep." John 10:12-13

Apostle Paul's teachings on financial support for Christian Workers

When teaching church leaders (pastors, teachers, leaders, etc), the Apostle Paul emphasized the principles of voluntary giving, sacrificial service, integrity, and trust in God's Grace while warning against greed, exploitation, and false motives in ministry. Paul modeled a selfless and humble approach to ministry, prioritizing the advancement of God's Kingdom over personal gain.

"And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us." 2 Corinthians 8:1-5

Paul emphasizes the importance of voluntary and generous giving for the support of the poor. He commends the churches in Macedonia for their spontaneous and sacrificial giving, even in their own poverty.

"For in what were you less favored than the rest of the churches, except that I myself did not burden you? Forgive me this wrong! Here for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for I seek not what is yours but you. For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?" 2 Corinthians 12:13-15

Paul sets an example of sacrificial service by supporting himself through his own labor rather than demanding financial support from the Corinthians. He emphasizes that Christian workers should not burden the church financially.

"We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man." 2 Corinthians 8:20-21

Paul stresses the importance of trustworthiness and integrity in handling offerings gathered from the churches as gift of sacrifice to the poor in Jerusalem. Paul assures the Corinthians that he and his companions are handling the relief offering with utmost care and transparency, ensuring that no suspicion arises regarding using funds. The funds were for the POOR IN JERUSALEM, not for Paul himself.

"For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve." 2 Corinthians 11:13-15

Paul warns against the love of money and the exploitation of the church for personal gain. He denounces false apostles and deceitful workers who seek to profit from their ministry and urges the Corinthians to discern between genuine servants of God and impostors.

"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Paul acknowledges that God is the ultimate provider, and he encourages the Corinthians to trust in God's provision for their needs. He emphasizes that their generosity will not only meet the needs of others but also result in abundant Grace from God.

"For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake." 2 Corinthians 4:5

In his ministry, Paul exemplifies humility and servanthood, emphasizing that his primary concern is not his own benefit but the spiritual growth and well-being of the Corinthians. Paul is willing to endure hardship and persecution to spread the gospel. Are you?

Collecting Money, Taking up Offerings, and Relief Offerings for the Poor in Jerusalem

Paul's teachings about "church offerings" (fundraising) underscore the importance of self-sacrificial giving, integrity in handling financial matters and prioritizing the needs of the poor over personal gain. Paul sets an example of humility and service, urging believers to follow in his footsteps by generously supporting those in need and avoiding any hint of financial exploitation in ministry.

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." Philippians 2:3-4

Paul emphasizes the purpose of relief offerings as a means of assisting poor Christians in need. He describes how the churches in Macedonia generously gave offerings beyond their means to help alleviate the suffering of fellow believers in Jerusalem.

"In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people." 2 Corinthians 8:2-4

The beneficiaries of the relief offering are the poor Christians in Jerusalem who are experiencing hardship and need assistance. The relief offering is intended to support them and relieve their poverty. The funds were not gathered to pay for the church workers or paid staff.

"For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the Lord’s people in Jerusalem. They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings." Romans 15:26-27

Relief offerings are gathered voluntarily, with each believer giving according to their means and willingness. The offerings are collected and distributed to those in need, ensuring that the relief reaches the intended recipients–the poor.

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7

Paul expresses concerns about potential mismanagement or mishandling of the relief offering, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in its distribution. He takes precautions to ensure that the funds are handled with integrity and that no suspicion arises regarding their use.

"We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man." 2 Corinthians 8:20-21

Paul exemplifies self-sacrificial giving by refusing to accept financial support from the relief offerings for himself. Instead, he supports himself through his own labor and freely gives of his resources to support the poor, demonstrating his commitment to serving others without seeking personal gain.

"nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate." 2 Thessalonians 3:8-9

Paul makes it clear that neither he nor any other servants of Christ have to receive payment for their ministry services. Receiving payment is a choice by the individual pastor, teacher, or church leader. Paul separates himself and others from profiting or financially gaining from their work for Jesus, emphasizing the importance of integrity and selflessness in serving God and others.

"I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’" Acts 20:33-35

The Consequences are Inevitable and Unavoidable, So Choose Wisely

The danger in building a local church is that ultimately, the day will come, and it will come soon when the leadership renounces people (real people Jesus died for) and sacrifices people for the good of the “church.” They mean for the good of the business and church growth, while Jesus left the ninety-nine to go after and save the ONE.

"And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. And He said to them, 'It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a robbers’ den.'" Matthew 21:12-13

The hired hands (people employed by the church) support and sacrifice for the money-making organization--their employer, their church. Their church is the one that pays the bills, which includes the salaries and wages of the ministers and pastors. There is nothing wrong with a person being supportive and loyal to his or her employer, but when the employees are the church leaders and they ignore this serious conflict of interest, Grace stops flowing.

"Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, and will come up and wait on them." Luke 12:37

Jesus, the epitome of selflessness, came not to be served but to serve. His character, a beacon of unwavering service, remains unchanged throughout time. Jesus commands us, pastors and church leaders, to follow in His footsteps. We must either relinquish our salaries or step down from leadership, as serving both is incompatible. This decision, a test of our commitment, requires choosing between financial gain and genuine service.

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

Across America, pastors passionately urge their congregation to serve the church, volunteering without financial compensation. However, there is a stark disparity when pastors themselves do not equally share in the sacrifice. In many cases, the local pastor controls the message, the vision, and the mission and is amongst the few to get paid as an employee. Yet, that same pastor calls for volunteers to do the heavy lifting, the ministry, all the while paying tithes and making financial offerings to the church. What about the example of Christ?

"For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." Galatians 5:13

While parishioners are encouraged to prioritize church service alongside their personal responsibilities, pastors often do not demonstrate the same sacrificial commitment, creating a disconnect that needs to be addressed.

"As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." 1 Peter 4:10

It is recommended that church leaders (pastors) currently receiving a salary step down from leadership roles if they wish to receive payment. The concern lies more with holding a leadership position while also receiving compensation.

"And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life." Matthew 19:29

Typically, employees receive their salary as a reward for their work. On the other hand, all church leaders should opt to forego any form of compensation and instead contribute offerings similar to those of other congregation members.

"just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

Paul was not stupid and his teaching about this subject is spot on. Paul claimed he was a willing bond-servant or slave of King Jesus. Slaves do not get paid, and those who choose slavery commit themselves solely to their Master.

"So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?.... For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you." John 13:12, 15

More importantly, Jesus did not suffer and die for a church worker, church program, or church building. Jesus suffered and died for us, each one of us individually. We are HIS PEOPLE, we are His Church.

"Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life." Mark 10:29-30

Jesus, as a servant serves the church, His BODY, His Bride commanded, "Deny yourself, pick up your cross, and FOLLOW ME!" In Peter's case, he immediately left his boat and his business, and followed Jesus.

"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." Matthew 16:25

Did Jesus mean what He said, or was He merely suggesting when He said, "The first will be last, and the last will be first... and, those who lose their life for my sake, will gain it?"

"I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothes. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to the men who were with me. In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" Acts 20:33-35

All the disciples of Jesus sacrificed everything they owned, including their lives. Peter and his brother gave up their fishing boats and their business with equipment. Jesus told them He would teach them to be fishers of men.

"To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God, says this: 'I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.'" Revelation 3:14-16

Jesus sent out His disciples—first twelve, then seventy. They were tasked with healing, preaching, and casting out demons, all without charging a single dime. Their mission was fueled by love and grace, reflecting their Master's selflessness. They brought hope and light wherever they went, their actions echoing the principles of the Kingdom of God: freely received, freely given.

"And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. And He sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to perform healing. And He said to them, 'Take nothing for your journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two tunics apiece. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that city. And as for those who do not receive you, as you go out from that city, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.' Departing, they began going throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere." Luke 9:1-6

In the Bible, the hired hands always desert the scene when things get rough. It is the hired hands that kill God’s prophets and persecute His people.

"Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. And He was saying to them, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. Whatever house you enter, first say, "Peace be to this house." If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you; and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, "The Kingdom of God has come near to you." But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, "Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the Kingdom of God has come near." I say to you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.'" Luke 10:1-12

When Jesus sent out the twelve and then the 70, He did not take up a collection. He gave specific instructions and they followed His instructions and they were successful. The disciples continued the practice after the infilling of the Holy Spirit 50 days after Jesus was resurrected.

"These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: 'Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, "The Kingdom of heaven is at hand." Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, or a bag for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his support.'" Matthew 10:5-10

Paid people are loyal to the one who signs their paycheck, as they should be. In the Bible, paid shepherds desert the sheep when the enemy shows up.

Paid pastors collect offerings and frequently request money through tithes and offerings, practices that are not supported by biblical teachings (Jesus himself did not collect tithes and offerings for himself, and neither did any of the disciples of Christ). These pastors act as financially responsible stewards over their organizations, striving to build successful and thriving businesses, and NOT THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

Today's pastors behave similarly to worldly business owners. They assume control over finances, messaging, branding, and mission, manipulating both the voice of the Lord and the flow of money. This presents a clear conflict of interest.

The modern-day church in America is in a state of disrepair, and it will not be restored. Can you identify a single denomination or local non-denominational church organization that will be recognized in Heaven or on Earth when Jesus returns? Just one? So why prioritize the pursuit of income, compensation, and the message to the body over the well-being of God's people?
